 Last Minute Travel

Yeah, working is great, but have you tried travelling? Click To Tweet

We are all up for a good deal, no matter how rich or less fortunate we are, we always enjoy a good bargain. Today, more than ever, the advertisers fly around images with great discounts and even a better last minute deals whether  it is for clothing, household item, travel deals and many more.

There are all around us. See them on billboards spread around the cities, might be the first things poping up when we open a computer or even via messages just because once we purchased something maybe not even remotely related to that particular deal. Anyhow, I am sure you all know what I am talking about.

Therefore, while it is an amazing opportunity to take advantage of a good deal, it is also best to have some check points to tick to make sure is the right option for you. So, in this article we want to look at the concept of the last minute travel with its ups and downs, making sure that we all enjoy the travel adventure.

In todays virtual world, there is no shortage of websites offering last minute travel deals. The idea behind these deals is that if a hotel is going to have a room empty or a flight is going to have an empty seat, it is  better for them to offer it to you at the last minute for a steep discount than it is to just let that spare capacity go to waste.

The big contradiction of last minute travel, however, is that while the places with a lot of spare capacity get cheaper, the places with very little get much more expensive. Booking Christmas flights at the last minute, for example, will never get you a good deal, simply because so many people want those flights. Instead, you will probably end up paying much more than you would have if you had booked early.

However, there is also a downside or less positive thing about these deals. As last minute travel deals are for the least in-demand places so you can end up with places that no-one wanted for a reason. Some of the hotels on offer cannot attract any customers because they are truly dire.

The flights on offer are often in the middle of the night, at times when it is very difficult to even get to the airport without a car because the public transport links are closed. There are all sorts of gotchas waiting with cheap last minute travel.

But it is cheap, and, as ever, that makes up for all sorts of sins. If you are willing to be flexible about when you fly and where you go, you can still get some very good deals and you will probably end up with the all-round budget experience, but what do you expect?

To avoid the very worst holidays, though, you should at least take the time to look up a review of the hotel you are going to stay in before you commit to booking it, no matter how good the deal seems, to make sure that you are not getting yourself into anything truly terrible.

Last Minute Travel  Made Easy

The growth of the Internet and budget airlines has turned last-minute flights into a huge industry  you can just be surfing around, and then, right there, there is  a flight cheap enough for you to buy on impulse and go away this weekend. If you are thinking about booking last minute flights, however, there are a few things you need to know.

Spontaneity is the best kind of adventure Click To Tweet

An important point to make is that you can not trust the prices you see quoted in advertising for last minute flights. This is because of the common practice of excluding booking fees, airport taxes and all sorts of other little extras from the price. These all get added on just when you have got your card out and you are ready to pay, in the hope that by then you won’t want to back out.

Also, you should realise that just because a flight says it goes to a big city like London or Paris, it does not mean that the airport is actually anywhere near. Budget airlines use smaller airports to avoid paying the higher airport charges at the larger ones, and these smaller airports can be as much as two hours away from the city centre by often unreliable public transport. In some cases, you can end up paying as much as you did for your plane tickets just to get a train to the place you thought was your destination.

On airlines that take bookings for seats, it is also worth noting that last minute flights will only have the seats that no-one else wanted, which usually means the ones in the middle of the row. This can be very important if you get airsick, or if you really want to sit together as a couple or family.

The biggest gotcha is that last-minute flights are always non-refundable. If you are going to buy one on impulse, make sure you can actually make it first, as there won’t be any backing out of the deal afterwards.

Together with last minute flights, last minute hotels are big business nowadays. The idea is that you take a room that would otherwise be empty (often because of cancellations), and in return you get a steep discount. However, as ever, it is a case of buyer beware.

It can be a very common experience to arrive in a hotel and find that there is actually no-one in it who didn’t come on a last-minute travel deal. This is either because the prices the hotel is trying to charge normal customers are too high, or because it is a terrible hotel. To avoid these places, check whether the hotel you find a last-minute deal on is otherwise fully-booked or at least busy if not, you should probably stay away.

Even in good hotels, though, you might find yourself stuck with the one bad room that they haven’t  been able to shift and the one that smells funny, or has a view of a brick wall outside the window. While this isn’t generally so terrible, you should at least prepare yourself for this possibility.

It is also quite likely, though not inevitable, that the cheaper hotels will be nowhere near the city centre, leaving you to commute by public transport each day if you want to see the sights, or else hang around in the suburbs. You should consider the costs of transport before you book, as a slightly more expensive hotel that is more central can often save you more than it costs.

A final thing to be aware of is that you can often get a good discount by booking a last minute flight and hotel as a package deal through the various agency websites. If you are doing this, though, make sure that you don’t let the savings pressure you into taking a bad flight or a bad hotel just because the other half of the deal seems so good.

Last Minute Family Travel

Last Minute Family Travel

We might all have some great day dreams about taking our family on the perfect vacation, whether it is to see Disneyland or on a cruise to the Bahamas, but more often than not, life intervenes. There might be accidents or problems and you might find that your plans get knocked for a loop.

The important thing to remember is that you are not alone and that there are options for you. More people than you might believe end up doing some last minute travel preparations and even if you have the majority of the trip to plan and not much time to plan it , you will find that last minute family travel is not nearly as bad as you might think.

When thinking about planning some last minute family travel, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First, make sure you know where you are going and why. Are you or your children (or preferably both) interested in it? Just because a destination is popular does not make it a good idea.

Remember that there are no universally perfect vacations, just perfect ones for you! Speak with your family about it; you might be surprised by what comes up as being a great place to visit.

Remember that when you engage in last minute family travel some methods of travel are more forgiving than others. For instance, there is a good chance that trying to travel by air will be difficult if not impossible to some of the destinations. Unless you manage to luck into some truly stupendous deals, you will end up paying a great deal of money for your tickets. Investigate other forms of travel.

Of course, driving is one of the greatest and most convenient ways to travel, but if you have the need for speed, you might be stuck with a plane ticket. If speed is less of a concern, consider taking a train. It’s roughly equivalent to the speed of a car, depending on where you are going, and you will find that you will have time to enjoy yourself.

When you are thinking about last minute family travel, this does not mean that you can skip on calling ahead to get hotel rooms. Some places will even allow you to make reservations online, so make sure that you have a plan on where you will spend the night.

You never know when a convention or a local sporting event will tie up every hotel room within 10 miles, so make sure that you have a good idea of where you and your family are sleeping. Even if you are calling less than 24 hours in advance, you will still beat out the walk ins who show up after your call.

  2. Many thanks to you for sharing such a beautiful article with us .I’m a traveler .Even though traveling knows something adventurous .But I like it a lot .The pictures and descriptions of your articles really fascinated me, especially everything in France .So here I want to go and I must go soon enough but I have a question .Are there any travel guides available here?

    1. Hi Shanta

I am very pleased that you enjoyed looking at our articles.

You should totally go and visit France – it is an amazing country.

About your question, do you mean travel guides as in help organising and planning your trip or personal guide?

If you are a more adventurous person than you can start with books on visiting France to help you decide which places you would like to see. Maybe you end up wanting to see only one place or to make a tour of multiple locations. This type of books can be purchased at a small price just around 12 pounds.

After you mind planned your travel you can go for a individual trip where you book and organise each part of the visit or you can book the entire holiday via travel sites. Most of these sites offers transfer between locations and full itinerary prints for your entire holiday BUT you must make sure before booking that they offer all you are looking for. If you are not sure then ask before booking.

If you are looking for private guiding or travel in a guided tour then you can search for that option as there are many offers. However, please make sure that you are doing it safe and via trusted travel agents.

And just to make sure I covered all the answers for your question… we only offer a rough guideline of the places we have been to, focusing on the sights that you should not miss in those particular places and also giving you tips about what might come up during your visit. Some of the articles (for example London) also include a personalised route within the city to reach and see the landmarks of the place, so you can look there for inspiration.

So if you want to visit Paris read again our article and get hold of a map of the city and locate each landmark discussed there, from there you can work out a route on foot or search the public transport to take you from one spot to the other. The same technique can be applied when you want to travel to multiple locations.

If you need any help or have more questions please do not hesitate to get in touch.

      Have fun!

  3. Well articulated I have to say. As you mentioned, we are steadily bombarded with different offers, even those unsolicited. While it is good to take advantage of a good deal, it is just as important to ensure that these deals are ideal for your needs.

I have to be up front though, last minute travel deals might be cheap, the downsides that accompany such deals are not always worth it. I’ll go with your recommendation to always research these opportunities to ensure that you do not make last minute mistakes.

    Kind regards

    1. Hi Rhain and thank you for your comment.

Yes, I have learned my lessons and now I am alway check well all the deals I found and I am choosing the one that make me feel safe.

  4. Hi Oana & Paula,

Thanks a million for the highly informative article about last-minute travel. I actually booked a last-minute flight a few months ago only to discover that taxes were not calculated within the price advertised which is what you advised us to beware of in your post. Adding insult to injury, they didn’t accept to refund me!

Can you provide us with a refundable last-minute flight booking option?

    1. Hi Jordan

Really sorry to hear about your troubles with the last minute flight. Going away should be fun and relaxing. Unfortunately, things like the one mentioned pop up to ruin the excitement.

Most of the last minute deals are ATOL or ABTA protected, so you, the customer, would be protected. However, not all deals come with protection so you must read the conditions very carefully.

I really hope you will not be put off from future travelling by the unfortunate situation you have been through. Have faith in better ones and do a better research. Last minute deals do not have to be something rushed, take couple of minutes to browse for couple of variations. I am sure you will find something suitable to you. Remember to check for financial protection and sometimes is best to check out an extra insurance as well just to make sure you are covering every corner.

      Have fun!!!

    1. Hi

As you said travel is enjoyed by everybody and in today’s fast moving world what better way to unwind than to travel and see the world. Hope you’ll find other articles on our website useful and good luck.

  6. Most of the time, our activities are planned activities. Although planning is good, sometimes it robs us that special excitement and discovery. So, I’d like to try these suggestions from you and try last-minute travel and an impromptu booking. But I must console myself this option is a bit higher in cost than that one that’s planned. But more exciting as it seems and I like that.

I’d like to ask, this seems easy with local travel. How about international travel, it this also possible?

    1. Hi Gomer

Thank you for your comment and really pleased that you have found it inspiring. You should definitely try it and I am sure you will be pleased. Spontaneity will bring more excitement in your travel, plus at least once in your life you should experience it. In this way you will know if its for you or not.

Regarding your question about the international travel my answer is that you can find even better deals. In my experience, when I was looking to book a holiday, I would find that one week abroad can be cheaper than couple of days within the country. So take a look, take your time and research what is out there. You will be surprised how many offers are there. Remember to check in with the checklist mentioned in the article to help you look for the best option.

      Enjoy!
